MA WIK’S SOLO AT GRANDMA OLD HOUSE
When the people of a house depart for various reasons, what remains within its walls?
This was Grandmother's home, where Mum and her siblings grew up. We've always been closer to Grandmother's family. Every New Year, we'd return to this house to gather for meals, until recent years when various ailments completely overtook Grandmother's body. Memories of New Year's Eve grew hazy. As she gradually lost the ability to distinguish between home and the care home, the house fell into disuse.
The main entrance remained permanently blocked by local bullies, while an unguarded path invited all manner of strange occurrences inside... A man of dubious origin took up residence in the small room once used to shelter illegal immigrants. The cleaner converted the old kitchen into a makeshift rest area. Grandad and Uncle's glasshouse construction business collapsed when the authorities stepped up enforcement, so naturally they piled all their building materials and miscellaneous furniture onto Grandma's property. A dead rat wrapped in red cloth lay on Grandma's bed. This household's layout was unusual: the kitchen, utility room, and small rooms rented to illegal immigrants were separate, some without locks. Unlike modern, integrated homes, these fragmented little rooms were indeed a home.
There was also a large balcony that bloomed wit. bright red flowers in spring. Behind the cluster of small rooms lay a hillside. We could climb the stairs, one person per step, then take a photograph. The main house stood apart from the outer areas. Each time I unlocked the front door, a sense of purity washed over me. Three or more deities guarded this space: Guanyin above, the Earth God below, and the Three Star Gods of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity upon the table. The chaos here raged day and night, yet compared to them, I felt more like an outsider. I cherish old things, yet resent the energy and time drained by their upkeep. What I truly love is their stillness. Ideally, one savours only the abstract notion of antiquity before turning away, transforming one's own room into a nunnery-like sanctuary. When disorder beckons, one retreats to the ancestral home. Naturally, tidiness inevitably yields to chaos; soon, the room's rhythm is reclaimed by materials and creative pursuits. This time, I wish to see how far I can spread something light and ethereal, almost ghostly, across the entire space. To savour and share with you an ever-shifting force.
